PAVE: Where?

Based on a participatory and inter-regional approach, PAVE conducted research in seven non-European countries and in the EU. The research endeavour encompassed empirical studies in selected municipalities of four Western Balkan countries (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia) and three MENA countries (Tunisia, Lebanon, Iraq).

Three thematic work packages (WP3: Cumulative extremisms, WP4: Institutions and leadership, WP5: Online & offline (de)radicalisation) offered comparative analysis of the similarities and differences within and between the Balkans and MENA, whereas work package 6 (Transnational dynamics and impact on/from Europe) focused on the transnational dynamics of vulnerability and extremism across the two regions as well as in relation to Europe.

For each fieldwork site, at least two PAVE members collaborated to implement the participatory approach to knowledge generation. The participation of local partners from outside the EU as case study country leads ensured that empirical research is locally driven, following a bottom up approach, and stimulated mutual learning between them and the EU-based country co-leads.
