PAVE: Where?

Based on a participatory and inter-regional approach, PAVE will conduct research in seven non-European countries and in the EU. The research endeavour will encompass empirical studies in selected municipalities of four Western Balkan countries (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia) and three MENA countries (Tunisia, Lebanon, Iraq).

Three thematic work packages (WP3: Cumulative extremisms, WP4: Institutions and leadership, WP5: Online & offline (de)radicalisation) will offer comparative analysis of the similarities and differences within and between the Balkans and MENA, whereas one work package (WP6: Transnational dynamics and impact on/from Europe) will focus on the transnational dynamics of vulnerability and extremism across the two regions as well as in relation to Europe.

For each fieldwork site, at least two PAVE members will collaborate to implement our participatory approach to knowledge generation. The participation of local partners from outside the EU as case study country leads will ensure that empirical research is locally driven, following a bottom up approach, and will stimulate mutual learning between them and the EU-based country co-leads.
